Here is a little view of what is going on in the background for the March 16th Student Debt Protest.
Camosun College student society continues to fight for students. We are calling for: 1. To eliminate interest rates on student loans. Currently, we have the highest. 2. To bring back the up front grants program that was eliminated in 2004. 3. To bring back funding levels to 2001 levels. The government has gone too far. Places like Vancouver Island University receive 49% of their funding, making it essentially a private post secondary institution. Here at Camosun, we are about to lose another 2 million dollars this year.
http://unitededucation.wordpress.com/ Being a student is tough, but with out a grants program in place, it's even tougher. Then when you graduate, you think you're in the clear, but now you have to pay interest rates on your student loans... the highest in Canada. Come to this protest and make your voice heard. A dozen student societies are coming out to voice their challenges they face.
Here we are prepping packages that are going to every MLA in the province. These are pieces that you filled out that show your debt when you graduate. The government should be doing more to support students in their pursuit of higher education. We are asking for: 1. The elimination of interest of student loans 2. Bringing back our upfront grants program that was axed in 2004.

Camosun College Student Society December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada. Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day marks the anniversary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal. They died because they were women. As well as commemorating the 14 young women whose lives ended in an act of gender-based violence that shocked the nation, December 6 represents an opportunity for Canadians to reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women in our society. It is also an opportunity to consider the women and girls for whom violence is a daily reality, and to remember those who have died as a result of gender-based violence. And finally, it is a day on which communities can consider concrete actions to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.
